According to Express, Manchester United have once again set their sights on Timo Werner. It is believed that the RB Leipzig forward has a release clause of just £27m despite having a long-term contract with the club. As a result, the Red Devils are ready to make a move in the upcoming January transfer window.
Werner is the most lethal German forward
Werner, since his move to RB Leipzig in 2016, has become one of the most prolific strikers in Europe. He is arguably the most dangerous German striker, having netted 72 goals in just 200 Bundesliga matches. He has scored an astonishing 74 goals for Leipzig in only 129 competitive games.
This season, in particular, Werner is enjoying the form of his life. Indeed, the German international has netted a whopping nine goals in just ten league matches, with three of those coming in an 8-0 rout over Mainz over the weekend. His contributions in front of goal have helped Leipzig enjoy a decent start under the leadership of new manager Julian Nagelsmann.
But, Werner’s performances are not only restricted to just club football. The ex-Stuttgart sensation has found the back of the net 11 times in his 28 international appearances for Die Mannschaft.
Is Werner a viable target for Manchester United?
Werner could help fix Manchester United’s chronic lack of goals. As evident in his statistics, the German is a lethal goalscorer and could be an intriguing replacement for the departed Romelu Lukaku.
However, there are certain problems regarding the potential arrival of Werner. His performance largely depends on the tactical system of the club while having good chemistry with teammates is equally important. He wasn’t the sharpest attacker during the early days of his career but has built a solid combination with Yussuf Poulsen at Leipzig.
At United, however, things could be different, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James being his potential teammates – none of them are familiar to the style of play Werner has played at Leipzig. Hence, he could find it difficult to integrate himself.
Moreover, Werner’s exceptionally cheap release clause would undoubtedly attract a lot of suitors, with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund being one of the potential destinations. Hence, the Red Devils are expected to face stiff competition in pursuit of the German.
But at the same time, Werner is indeed a good transfer target for Manchester United, and it’s worth taking the risk on the Leipzig striker.
