According to the reports from the Mirror, Bayern Munich have held talks with top agent Giovanni Branchini regarding the signing of Manchester City winger Leroy Sane. The German came close to leaving the home of the English champions last summer when Munich were heavily linked with him. However, a severe injury to Sane in August which is likely to see him out for seven months halted Munich’s pursuit for Sane.
However, the Bundesliga giants have not given up their hopes of signing Sane, and they are looking to return for him in the summer of 2020. A move in January is unlikely to go through. The German winger would enter the final year of his contract with Manchester City next summer.
It is believed that Branchini has close links with Bayern Munich and he met with Sane’s agent David Gardner not too long ago. It remains to be seen now what would transpire in the future of the German international.
Why do we feel Sane is unlikely to extend his stay?
Sane is a left-winger by trade, and he is primarily competing for a first-team place with Raheem Sterling. The former Liverpool player has taken his game to the next level in the last two seasons, and he is currently one of the best players in his position in world football. Moreover, City are reportedly looking to offer him a bumper contract, so the Englishman is going to be a long term player for the Citizens on the left flank.
What can Manchester City do?
With Sane yet to sign a new deal, Manchester City might have to part ways with him soon so that they can recoup a high fee for his services. Reports in August came that the Premier League champions had rejected a £72m proposal for the winger. With Sane injured this season and also entering the last year of his contract soon, a bid like that might do the trick next summer for Bayern Munich.
Guardiola has coped well without an explosive winger like Sane, and that is a testament to the quality and overall depth of the Citizens squad. They had also missed Kevin De Bruyne for large parts last season, and the Belgian playmaker wasn’t really missed due to the likes of Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan covering in his absence.
Playing for Germany regularly could tempt Sane to move to Bayern Munich. Hence, City should look to make the most out of the situation by selling him in the summer.
