According to the latest reports from the Mirror, French heavyweights PSG are looking to make a move for Liverpool’s versatile attacker Adam Lallana. It is being said that Edinson Cavani is likely to move to LA Galaxy and that has opened up a place for Lallana.
Lallana’s current situation at Liverpool
It is quite surprising to see PSG eyeing Lallana as a possible replacement option for an out and out striker like Cavani. The English midfielder has struggled with injuries in the last two years, but he is currently fit and available for the Reds. However, Lallana has failed to get much gametime under Klopp this season as he has played 113 minutes of football this season in the Premier League.
The Reds have in fact used him in a deeper role when he started in the tie against Aston Villa. Lallana showed his versatility by playing as a defensive midfielder, and he did quite well in that outing. Lallana was in the limelight recently when he scored the all-important equaliser against Manchester United which continued Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season. The Englishman is currently in the final year of his contract at the Merseyside club, and we don’t see him getting an extension once his contract expires.
That leaves the door open for PSG to have talks with him in January as clubs from outside England can sign players on a pre-contract deal. Lallana reportedly earns £7m/year at the moment.
Should the Reds allow Lallana to leave?
The 31-year-old was a crucial player in Klopp’s set up when the German had taken over at the Merseyside club. His versatility, technical ability and work rate made him a vital player in midfield. However, Liverpool have come up leaps and bounds in the last few seasons and injuries haven’t helped Lallana’s cause as he hasn’t been able to fight for his place.
New midfielders like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho, have gone ahead in the pecking order. Lallana has to be satisfied with cameo appearances, but he is someone who has never complained about his lack of playing time and has given his all on the pitch whenever he has got his chances.
Liverpool would have no qualms in seeing Lallana leave in the summer on a free transfer. PSG will likely utilise him in various midfield positions instead of the attacking areas. His versatility and technical ability on the ball is one of the prime reasons why a club of PSG’s stature might still be interested in him.
