Liverpool will host Manchester City at Anfield in what would be a heavyweight clash between arguably the two best sides in world football right now. The two teams have once again looked head and shoulders above the rest of the pack in the Premier League. However, Manchester City haven’t had a perfect start to their season so far as they have already lost twice in their bid to defend the title.
What to expect from two teams?
Last time when the two teams met at Anfield, it was relatively a cagey affair, and both sides respected each other’s strengths. The game ended at 0-0, and it was more of a battle of chess than a no holds barred street fight. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a similar game being played out this time as well. However, the onus would be slightly on City to reduce the point gap as they trail Liverpool by six points. The first goal could be crucial, and that could spark the game into a proper battle.
Talking tactics
Liverpool
The Reds will likely lineup in their typical 4-3-3. Klopp’s greatest strength in the past year has been his adaptability. They have been able to find different ways to win games even when their backs have been against the wall. Their greatest attacking threat is likely going to come from their fullbacks again.
Manchester City
Guardiola will also lineup in his own 4-3-3 formation. The absence of some of their crucial players is going to be a big blow for him. The defence has looked especially shaky and with now Claudio Bravo in goal, Guardiola might want his team to go out and play their natural attacking game.
Team News
Liverpool
Joel Matip who emerged as the mainstay at the back is going to miss out. Xherdan Shaqiri is also going to be unavailable due to injury.
Probable lineup: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Mane, Salah, Firmino
Manchester City
Aymeric Laporte, Ederson, Rodri, Leroy Sane and David Silva are going be the significant absentees for City.
Probable lineup: Bravo; Walker, Otamendi, Stones, Mendy; Fernandinho, B. Silva, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Sterling, Aguero.
Key men
Liverpool
Sadio Mane has been in terrific form in 2019, and he has scored some crucial goals for the Reds. His work rate, pace and finishing skills are once again going to be essential for the Reds. Alexander-Arnold has been the chief creator for the Reds at right-back, and he will once again look to influence play in the attacking third. However, he will need to be at his best defensively to stop Raheem Sterling.
Manchester City
Kevin De Bruyne has been fantastic so far this season and his ability to find killer passes from anywhere across the pitch will make him a significant threat. Fernandinho should be back in a defensive midfield role, and he will need to be at his dominant best to keep City’s shaky backline tight.
