According to the Mirror, Manchester United are poised to hijack Liverpool’s deal for Timo Werner. The RB Leipzig forward has been identified as one of the top targets for the Red Devils. It is believed that he has a release clause of £27m that can be activated in January and United could be in pole position to sign him.
Hence, this recent development will serve as a huge blow for Liverpool, and in this article, we will talk three reasons why the Reds must beat Manchester United in pursuit of Werner.
A lethal goalscorer
Liverpool have a world-class centre forward in Roberto Firmino. But, one would argue that the Brazilian is not necessarily a prolific goalscorer like Sergio Aguero or Harry Kane. As a result, the Reds have often appeared overreliant on the services of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane as far as goalscoring is concerned.
Werner, in that regard, might solve that problem. The German international is known for his exquisite finishing, having notched up 74 goals in just 129 competitive matches for Leipzig since joining the club in 2016. His prolific nature in front of goal has helped Die Roten Bullen emerge as one of the top dogs of German football.
This season, in particular, Werner is enjoying the form of his life. He has already netted nine goals in ten matches, with three of them coming in the recent 8-0 win over 1.FSV Mainz on the weekend.
He can offer tactical versatility
What makes Werner such a sought-after striker in Europe is that he is not only a prolific goalscorer but also a versatile number nine in the Bundesliga as he was initially groomed as a wide attacker during his days at VfB Stuttgart.
So essentially, Werner is blessed with a lot of pace and quick feet that allow him to shift into a wide role even during a match, thus opening up more spaces for his teammates while leaving his markers completely helpless. Hence, the Leipzig forward can offer tactical versatility to Jurgen Klopp, which is always a bonus.
An ideal fit to Klopp’s tactical setup
Aside from his goal-scoring prowess, Werner is known for his aggression and pace, making him a tailor-made fit for Klopp’s Gegenpressing style of play at Liverpool. Just like Firmino, the 23-year-old could be extremely useful in the first line of the press, thanks to his aggression and willingness to close down defenders.
Moreover, Werner can be utilised as a runner, which, coupled with the pace of Salah and Mane, could make Liverpool the most feared team in European club football. Therefore, the Reds must sign this German international at any cost, if they are to sustain their dominance over English football and rekindle their glory days.
