According to a recent report by the Sun, Leicester City are working towards sealing a move for SC Freiburg centre-half Robin Koch when the transfer window reopens in January. The same source has stated that the Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers has identified the German defender as an ideal replacement for Harry Maguire, who left the King Power Stadium to join Manchester United last summer. The Foxes have now joined the race to land Koch with Freiburg willing to entertain offers in the region of £15m for their prized asset (via the Sun).
Koch’s Impressive Spell At Freiburg
Koch has made a solid start to this campaign after putting in a few commanding displays at the back for the Bundesliga outfit so far. He has performed brilliantly to help his team climb to the fourth spot of the league table. Freiburg boasts the third-best defensive record in the division after allowing 12 goals in 11 matches during this season.
The German defensive ace has featured in 13 matches for Christian Streich’s side this term, scoring one goal in all competitions. He is averaging 1.2 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game in the German top-flight (stats via whoscored).
The Kaiserslautern-born talent has also secured one international cap for the German national team thus far. The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Bundesliga, so it is no surprise that he is in such high demand at the moment.
What Are The German Defender’s Best Attributes?
Koch is a physically dominant centre-back who can make some vital interceptions for his side. He is also quite useful when making clearances at the back. The German prospect can also pass the ball well and doesn’t mind joining in on the attack when there is space for him to run onto in the opposition half. He is a potent threat from set-pieces as well and can contribute by scoring the odd goal from time to time.
Will Koch Be A Good Fit For Rodgers?
Recruiting a quality defender like Koch will undeniably bolster Rodgers’ defensive options at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes have currently got the best defensive record in the Premier League as Jonny Evans has struck up a brilliant partnership with Caglar Soyuncu at the heart of the Leicester backline. However, Rodgers needs another defensive option who can come in and compete for a starting berth at the King Power.
Koch is good enough to secure a regular first-team spot in English football so the East Midlands side will do well to prise him away from Freiburg in January. The German rising star will be a great fit for the Foxes as he is a proven defender who can help Leicester earn a top-four spot at the end of this campaign.
