Liverpool are currently ruling the roost at the top of the table in the Premier League. The Reds have a six-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City with whom they will clash heads at Anfield next weekend. The Reds have shown immense power of recoveries of late as they have hauled some crucial points even after going behind.
Adam Lallana was able to help Liverpool gain a crucial point against Manchester United recently at Old Trafford. The Liverpool midfielder also went on to start against Aston Villa in the defensive midfield role which is usually taken by Fabinho. The Englishman did a decent job and showed his versatility and utility in Klopp’s setup.
Klopp comments on Lallana’s future
The 31-year-old will be out of contract in the summer and reports (The Telegraph) have emerged that clubs from the United States and China are already eyeing for his signature. Recently Klopp was asked about Lallana’s future, and the German manager said (Daily Star), ”I don’t know exactly what will happen in May, for anybody by the way, but the best thing a footballer can do when you have the opportunity play well, and that’s what Adam is doing.”
“Now is the second time in a row, when he came on against [Manchester] United he was good. After a long time he had with some injuries here and there, he is in outstanding shape physically. That’s the most important thing for a career and all the rest, we will see.”
Should Liverpool hand him an extension?
Lallana at best is now a squad player for Liverpool. With the fixture congestion set to start soon, the English midfielder will have an important role to play in various competitions. He is technically gifted and tenacious in the middle. Injuries have hampered his chances in the last few years. When Klopp had arrived at the club after Rodgers’ sacking, Lallana was a crucial and a regular player in his setup due to his versatility and hard-working nature.
As for now, we think that the 31-year-old has run his course at Liverpool and it is highly unlikely that the Reds would give him a new deal. However, he should still be good enough to play in the Premier League for some of the lesser teams, and a move to China and USA could probably wait for two or three years more. Klopp will not come out and say that he will not offer him a contract after the summer, but there is a general feeling around that the Reds will part ways with him in 2020.
