Even the word bargain might not do justice to what Rangers managed to do by bringing in Glen Kamara for £50,000 from Dundee last season. The Finland international managed to become the mainstay in midfield soon, and he showed his capabilities the previous season.
He was slow to begin with this season, but the former Arsenal prospect has produced some dominating displays in the middle in the past month. His impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed as he was earlier linked to Brighton and Crystal Palace and then Championship heavyweights Leeds United.
Reports from Herald Scotland mentioned that if Rangers get a bid in the region of £8m, then they might be tempted to sell the midfielder. However, Steven Gerrard recently made it clear that there has been no concrete interest in the central midfielder.
Gerrard responds to Kamara’s future
The English manager said (Birmingham Mail), ”We haven’t heard of any interest down south, we’ve read tons about it though, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was interest in Glen Kamara because he’s an outstanding footballer. He’s been outstanding since he walked in the door. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself for how we got him and what we got him for. The message for Glen and the other players is we always reward our players for consistent performances over a long period of time. Glen will be treated no different.”
Maybe the gaffer is hinting that he could give the midfielder a new contract if he continues to impress. However, Gerrard also mentioned that Kamara signed a ‘strong contract’ when he moved from Dundee to Ibrox.
Good news for Rangers, for now, is that there hasn’t been any real interest for the midfielder. However, we are still a few weeks away from the January transfer window, and things could change. The club recently posted a loss of just over £11m, and there could be a temptation to balance the books by letting go of Kamara.
Why could Kamara be sacrificed?
We believe that if Rangers receive an offer in the region of £8-10m, then they can let go of their international midfielder. It will be a loss for the Bears, but they have enough options in midfield right now to cope with it. Joe Aribo has impressed in patches, Scott Arfield can also do a job in the middle, and the experienced Andy King could also come in handy.
It’s essential to keep the business side of the club going strong, and maybe Rangers might sacrifice Kamara instead of Morelos in January. However, as things stand, Kamara is likely to stay as there is yet to be an approach made by any prospective suitor.
