Former Arsenal midfielder Glen Kamara has been a bargain signing for Rangers. The Finland international joined the Ibrox outfit in January for a cut-price deal of £50,000 from Dundee FC. Since then, the 24-year-old has managed to play a crucial role for Rangers at the middle of the park.
However, his impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed as recent reports from the Daily Mail emerged that Kamara is being linked with a move to Aston Villa, Brighton and Crystal Palace. Former Celtic defender and Scotland international Jackie McNamara recently had his say on Kamara attracting interest from the Premier League. He believed that the 24-year-old would be a low-risk signing for the Premier League clubs.
McNamara on Scotland being a cheap market
Speaking to Football Insider McNamara said, ”He did well last season, and it took him a little bit of time to settle back into this season, but he’s definitely done well. He did well last week in the European game; he’s still at a young age. Scotland’s a cheap market compared to what they’d have to pay down south. It’s not much of a gamble to go and sign somebody in form as it is down there, where they’d have to fork out.”
Why McNamara is spot on with his assessment
McNamara is spot on with his assessment that clubs from down south have found Scotland to be a cheap market. Transfermarkt is valuing Kamara at £765,000. Given that Rangers paid £50,000 they still stand in to make a good amount of profit. However, £765,000 will be peanuts for Premier League clubs, and Kamara is well worth more than that after his performances this year for the Gers.
How much should Gerrard look to demand for Kamara?
Given that he still has his contract until 2023, we think that Rangers should atleast demand somewhere around £5m for him in January. But the truth is, even then, the likes of Aston Villa, Brighton and Crystal Palace will find Kamara to be low-risk signing. Given that Kamara is more or less regular in the first team, hopefully, Gerrard wouldn’t budge for a lower price tag on him in January. Rangers need to play hardball on Kamara given his incredible talents, and they should look to keep him atleast until the end of the season.
The Finland international started this season slowly as he looked off the pace, but it is expected that he will soon get back to his best. Gerrard called him a ‘Rolls Royce‘ after one of the games last season because of the ease with which Kamara ran the show and dominated proceedings in midfield. Hopefully, Rangers can get the best price for him if they decide to sell him in the future.
