In a recent segment of the Transfer Window Podcast (transcripted by the Daily Record), Duncan Castles stated, “There is a lot of interest from the Everton end in Mikel Arteta as a candidate should they need to make a change.
“This makes a lot of sense because Arteta’s status in the game is very high.
“He has not managed yet but he’s credited as an important part of Manchester City ‘s treble-winning campaign last season as Pep Guardiola’s principle assistant. He was a strong candidate for the Arsenal job before they appointed Unai Emery.
“This is one to pay attention to and see how it develops.”
Everton’s Dismal Start To This Premier League Season
It is understood that the Toffees would consider moving in for Arteta if Silva’s struggles continue at Goodison Park (via the Daily Record). The Everton head coach has been in a losing battle to win over the fans’ support after his team’s poor start to this campaign.
The Merseyside club currently find themselves in 15th place in the Premier League standings following their 2-1 victory over Southampton last weekend. Most of their first-team players have struggled to find consistency in terms of their on-field performances this term.
Everton have a tough run of games coming up following the visit of Norwich City at Goodison Park after the international break. Silva will have to lead his players to face the likes of Leicester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United before Christmas. Therefore, the 42-year-old will find it difficult to save his managerial position at Merseyside if his side fails to put some wins on the board within the next few weeks.
What Makes Arteta A Worthy Candidate To Replace Silva?
Arteta has done a phenomenal job as the assistant manager of Man City. The Spanish coach has learnt a lot from acting as the deputy to Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. He has been able to help his team win the Premier League two years in a row, so there is no doubt that his managerial stock has risen in European football.
The 37-year-old knows the Merseyside club from inside out following his successful six-year stint as a player. Hence, it could be an ideal destination for Arteta to pursue his managerial dreams, similar to how Frank Lampard has gone back to his old club, Chelsea and found success this season.
Will Arteta Be A Good Fit For Everton?
Arteta will be an excellent fit for Everton but only if the Merseyside club is looking to build for the long-run. The Spaniard will need time before he can succeed as a first-team head coach so the Toffees will have to be patient with him if they decide to replace Silva with him in the near future.
