Everton boss Marco Silva decided to exclude his summer signing Moise Kean from his match-day squad that travelled to Southampton on Saturday. The Toffees head coach was quizzed on whether his decision to drop Kean was for tactical reasons to which he replied (via the Liverpool Echo), “[A] decision, just decision.
“Yeah. [His reaction was] really good. For sure, he will react stronger the next training sessions when he will be with us.
“Moise is working really hard. He is a young boy with a very good quality as well, doing his best to adapt as fast as we can to a different football as well.
“He has all of my support and my staff and his team-mates to keep growing. For sure he will do that and in some weeks and some months you will see Moise in a better level for sure.”
Kean’s Miserable Start To Life At Goodison Park
Even though Silva remains confident that the Italian youngster will ‘keep growing’, the early signs have not been promising since his arrival from Juventus in a £27m deal before the start of this campaign. The 19-year-old is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his new employers which is quite a surprise considering how highly rated he had been in Italian football for his eye-catching performances in Turin.
It seems like he is finding it difficult to cope with the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League. Kean would need time to settle into life at Merseyside before he can hopefully start firing for the Blues of Merseyside. The ex-Torini youth prospect has featured in 11 matches for Everton this term and has just one assist to his name across all competitions. However, he has a decent goal-scoring record for the Italian national side, having netted two goals in three international matches for his country thus far.
Can Kean Find His Way Back At Merseyside?
The fact that Silva has opted to name Anthony Gordon, who is yet to make a senior appearance for the club, in his match-day squad over Kean suggests that the Everton boss wants to his summer signing to fight for his right to play in the Premier League. So the Italian starlet will be expected to work tirelessly on the training ground and prove his worth before he is thrown into the deep end of regular top-flight football.
Kean is very quick and agile in the way he operates as a centre-forward up top. The Italian talent also tends to make some dangerous runs behind the opposition half, but he can sometimes find it hard to beat the offside trap. He was also a lethal finisher during his time in Italy but has lacked the confidence to take his chances in English football so far.
Only time will tell whether Kean has what it takes to succeed for the Toffees. The Everton speedster still has a mountain to climb before he is ready to start banging in the goals for fun in the top tier of England someday.
