Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos has been racking up the goals again for Rangers this season as he already has 22 goals to his name in all competitions. With a form like that, the 23-year-old is bound to receive attention from some of the top leagues. Morelos has also maintained that he dreams of playing (Daily Record) in the English Premier League.
Gerrard though around a week back replied emphatically on Morelos’ future and said (The Scottish Sun), ”I’m not confident… I’m sure. I’m 100 per cent sure he’s not going anywhere (in January).”
The striker’s impressive form has helped Rangers match Celtic point for point and goal for goal in the Premiership so far, and they have even made it to the League Cup finals. The Glaswegian giants are also in an advantageous position to move into the knockout stages of the Europa League.
Gerrard’s latest comments on Morelos’ future
However, Gerrard has seemingly backtracked on his earlier remarks, and he recently went on to give a more matured and thoughtful reply on Morelos’ future. He said (The Scottish Sun), ”We never stop looking for replacements for all of our players. When the window opens, every one of our players has a price. That’s what we’re dealing with.”
“But a decision like that wouldn’t have anything to do with me — because everyone knows what my answer would be, certainly with Morelos. That decision will be taken out of my hands, but Dave King and the board know what my feelings would be if a bid was to land.”
Why is this a more realistic response from Gerrard?
Gerrard went on to indicate that if Morelos is sold in January, then it wouldn’t be his doing. He also claimed that the Bears are eyeing a replacement for him even though earlier, the manager had mentioned that he was 100 percent sure that the striker is going nowhere.
Morelos is currently one of the most significant assets at the club and selling him in January will purely be based on financial reasons. Realistically, the clubs from the Premier League can blow away Rangers with an offer for Morelos, so the latest response from Gerrard was a more realistic one.
Rangers had reported a loss of over £11m, and we feel that the board members of the club could very well be tempted to sell Morelos to balance the books if the money is right. The football side and the business side of a club need to work hand in hand, and maybe that’s why Gerrard in his recent interview kept the door open for a Morelos exit.
The Colombian’s departure for any kind of price tag wouldn’t sit easy with the Gers faithful as the club will run a risk of losing pace with Celtic in their title charge. Even with money in hand, there will be no guarantee that a replacement will start finding goals straightaway. Hopefully, from Rangers’ point of view, they can keep hold of the striker atleast up until the end of the season.
