According to a recent report by the Daily Express, Premier League giants Chelsea are said to be lining up a January deal for RB Leipzig star Timo Werner if their transfer ban is lifted at the court hearing scheduled for the 20th of November. It has been suggested that if Chelsea do get a positive result, they will go on a £150m spending spree, targeting players across four different leagues.
Although the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Ben Chilwell and Moussa Dembele are being linked too, it’s the prospect of seeing German international forward Timo Werner in a blue shirt that will be most exciting for Chelsea fans. Although this won’t be an easy task, given that they weren’t allowed to sign anyone in the summer, Marina Granovskaia, with guidance from Frank Lampard, will look to splurge in an attempt to further strengthen their overachieving squad.
How Would Timo Werner Fit In At Chelsea?
The 23-year-old has been playing in the German top-flight for four years now, and he’s consistently managed to score goals. Although the youngster tends to operate out of a central striker’s role for his club, he can play on either flank or as a number ten as well, making him a versatile option for Frank Lampard.
The youngster is a strong runner off the ball as well, and we’ve seen from the season so far that Chelsea have the creativity and vision to pick out some special passes from midfield. The distribution of the likes of Jorginho and Christian Pulisic would bring the absolute best out of the German striker. He is an extremely technical forward, who makes sharp turns in and around the box, and keeps a very composed head in front of goal as well.
The resurgence of Tammy Abraham will probably mean that the striker’s position isn’t going to be up for grabs anytime soon. But considering the quality that Werner possesses in the final third, he would be an asset in any position across the Blues’ front-line. The German tends to work extremely hard of the ball and would be a long term replacement for the likes of Pedro and Willian.
Why Chelsea Should Go All Out For The German’s Signature
Despite being just 23, the forward’s involvement rate is quite scary, to say the least, having picked up 74 goals and 33 assists from 129 appearances for Leipzig. This season as well, from the ten Bundesliga fixtures that have been played, he has already found the back of the net on nine occasions. At such a young age, he already has 28 international caps to his name, with 11 goals to show for it as well.
The Blues’ old guard of players are slowly starting to wither away, and although Willian and Pedro will undoubtedly have important parts to play in this campaign, the next season might be a whole different ballgame. Signing a player like Werner would come as a statement of intent from the Blues, especially considering the brilliant crop of players already at Frank Lampard’s disposal.
