In a recent interview with talkSPORT (via the Daily Express), former Premier League striker Darren Bent backed Chelsea to acquire the services of Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell during the January transfer window if their transfer ban gets overturned by then. Bent shared his opinion on talkSPORT and said (via the Daily Express), “I don’t know how much money they’re going to have if this ban is overturned, but if they can go and get Ben Chilwell I think that’s really the only position where you’d say ‘well, if we can strengthen somewhere, it will be there’,”
The Sun had claimed earlier this month that the Pensioners were plotting a move to bring the Foxes defender to Stamford Bridge with Frank Lampard expected to be handed a £150m transfer kitty if the club are allowed to sign players this winter.
Chilwell’s Incredible Form For Leicester This Season
Chilwell has made a promising start to this campaign and has been a key member of Brendan Rodgers’ side behind their recent resurgence in the Premier League. The East Midlands outfit are currently sitting in third place of the league table, just two points behind the English champions, Manchester City.
The talented full-back has featured in nine league matches for Leicester this term, scoring one goal while grabbing three assists across all competitions. The 22-year-old has taken 0.8 shots and made 1.3 key passes per game in the English top-flight. On the defensive end, he has averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per match (stats via whoscored).
What Does The English Prospect Offer On The Pitch?
Chilwell is quick and agile full-back who can make some driving runs down the left flank. He has excelled with his ball-distribution this season which explains why he has already got a tally of three assists in the top tier of England. He is also a reliable presence when defending at the back and can be a hard man to shrug off in a 1v1 footrace. Furthermore, the Leicester star is a willing worker and always gives his 100% whenever he steps on to the field.
Will Chilwell Be A Decent Option For The Pensioners?
Recruiting a left-back of Chilwell’s qualities and potential will undeniably be a massive coup for the Pensioners. However, there are no guarantees that the West London outfit would be allowed to sign players in January. Even if they could, the Foxes have been more consistent than Chelsea in the Premier League this season, so there is no reason for Chilwell to give up on his dreams at the King Power Stadium in favour of a move to the Bridge.
A transfer is unlikely to happen, but there is no doubt that Chilwell will be a brilliant acquisition for Lampard if he can find a way to pull off a deal to bring him to the English capital this winter.
