According to L’Equipe, as cited by the Daily Mail, Barcelona will have to pay £51m in order to secure the services of Eduardo Camavinga. The Rennes midfielder has emerged as a target for the Catalan giants. But, the French club has opted to demand a hefty fee for their young sensation, hoping it would be enough to fend off potential suitors including Barca and Manchester United.
Camavinga’s rapid rise to prominence
Promoted to the first team earlier this year, Camavinga has become one of Europe’s most sought youngsters, thanks to his excellent performances in the Ligue 1 this season. The Frenchman did feature in seven games in the previous campaign. But, it was his performance against Paris Saint-German that really caught the eye of not only his coach but also several clubs across Europe.
Camavinga has since become a first-team regular for Rennes, despite being only 17 years young. He has already featured in 12 league matches, forming an excellent combination with the likes of Benjamin Bourigeaud and Clement Grenier. His contributions in midfield have provided additional security for the backline. As a result, the club has conceded only 15 goals so far this term.
But, at the same time, it has also attracted the interest of giants like Barcelona and Manchester United. The midfielder’s current contract expires in 2022, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him depart Rennes before the start of next season.
Is Camavinga a viable target for Barcelona?
There is a substantial amount of risk involved, should Barcelona agree to pay a fortune for the services of Camavinga. The Rennes starlet has very little experience at the highest level of football, and at the age of just 17, he is surely going to take some time integrating to Spanish football.
That being said, Camavinga’s composure with the ball really makes him a class apart from his counterparts. Moreover, he can shield the backline pretty well, while his positioning sense is well beyond his years. Hence, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Catalans to take the gamble and sign the youngster next summer.
The Spanish giants are in need of a midfield overhaul, with key players like Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal nearing the final phase of their respective careers. They have already brought in Frenkie de Jong and the potential acquisition of Camavinga, in that regard, should help build the framework for their future midfield setup.
