Aston Villa have been credited (Birmingham Mail) with a keen interest in Rangers’ in form striker Alfredo Morelos for quite some time. The Colombian forward is being valued at £20m. However, a January move could be off the cards as Gerrard firmly said that Morelos wouldn’t be leaving in the winter transfer window.
Morelos on transfer speculations
Now Morelos also opened up about his transfer speculation and maintained that no contact has been made by any of the interested parties.
He told Antena 2 as cited by Birmingham Mail, ”There is much speculation about my departure, many teams that would be offering a good amount of money for me. I have not talked to anyone, but if God allows it, I think that many clubs can come for good performances. But no, I’ve had no contact with anyone.”
Why should Villa go after him?
The 23-year-old is said to appeal to the Villa boss because of his young age and ability to grow further. Morelos has already bagged over 20 goals this season in all competitions. The Colombian was once again fantastic against Porto as he scored a brilliant goal and then set up the second to give Rangers a crucial 2-0 win.
The fact that he can replicate his performance in Europe against an established side like Porto suggests that he wouldn’t be a wrong move for Villa. The English club currently relies heavily on Wesley Moraes to lead the line upfront. Beyond him, Smith has Jonathan Kodjia who hasn’t played much this season due to injury. Villa needs a striker who would bring in more depth and competition for places, and someone like Morelos can be an ideal fit for Dean Smith.
Morelos can score every kind of goal when he is on the pitch as he can stretch play with his smart runs. He is also capable of playing well with his back behind the goal, and his hold up play is also worth mentioning. His goal-scoring instincts and ability to finish off moves will make him an asset and Villa should be considering a move for him.
The striker has also improved on his on-field behaviour as he was often seen as a hot-headed player who could become a liability to his team. But this season, Morelos has looked a lot calmer. Given that he is such a valuable player for Rangers, signing him in January would be tough. But Villa should be all over him in the summer of 2020.
