Sunderland who are sitting on the ninth spot, 8 points away from the top spot, have sacked manager Jack Ross going into the game against Wycombe. Former Bolton manager Phil Parkinson has taken over, and ironically there were even reports that Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was one of the top contenders to take over at the Stadium of Light.
Therefore, both the teams might be slightly unsettled going into this tie with what has gone on in the last few days. Wycombe currently occupies the second spot on the table and are unbeaten in their last four games. Given that they are at home, they will likely go in as the favourites for this tie. Parkinson was officially announced on Thursday, so it’s hard to see how much of a change or impact he will be able to make for this tie. Nevertheless, he will look for a winning start this weekend.
Team News: Winger Duncan Watmore is going to miss out. Elliot Embleton is also likely to be unavailable. Defender Alim Öztürk is significant doubt.
Sunderland Predicted Lineup vs Wycombe
Formation (4-2-3-1)
Defence
Scotland international Jon McLaughlin is going to be a nailed-on starter in goal for the Black Cats. Summer arrival Jordan Willis is expected to start in the centre back role. 32-year-old Joel Lynch should partner him.
At left-back, Laurens De Bock should keep his place who is on loan from Leeds United. Former Millwall player Conor McLaughlin is expected to start at the right side of the defence.
Midfield
Max Power has one goal to his name in League One this season, and he is likely to start in midfield. Dylan McGeouch should partner him in the double pivot. The duo will form a base of attack and will also shield the back four from Wycombe attackers.
Experienced winger Aiden McGeady has continued to look one of the most threatening players in the attacking third. He has three goals and two assists to his name so far in the league, and he should play in his usual left-wing role. Versatile player midfielder Luke O’Nien is expected to start in the attacking midfield position. Chris Maguire is so far the top scorer in the league for Black Cats with four goals, and he will play from the right flank.
Attack
Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg have looked ineffective so far. Hence, Marc McNulty could get the nod to start upfront.
