For the first time in quite a while, Tottenham Hotspur are struggling due to their lack of solidity at the back. The Lilywhites recently conceded seven goals against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. And with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld slowly nearing the final phase of their respective careers, it’s time for a change.
One player Tottenham should keep an eye on is Alessio Romagnoli. In this article, we will discuss how AC Milan could fix their defensive woes.
A born leader at the back
There is one thing having a leader at the back. But it is a completely different thing having an aggressive and inspiring leader who can enhance the overall quality of the side.
Tottenham have a leader in Vertonghen. But, the Belgian often appears too passive and is not inspiring enough. That’s where Romagnoli could come into the fray. Much like Virgil van Dijk or David Luiz, the Italian international is an aggressive defender, who is captaining the AC Milan side following the departure of Leonardo Bonucci.
Romagnoli can instil an aggressive mentality in the Spurs backline, making them much more vigilant during the defensive phases. And this could be important if the Lilywhites are to challenge for the title as well as do well in the UEFA Champions League.
An excellent passer
Unlike any other robust defender, Romagnoli is also an excellent passer of the ball. Although most of his passes are short vertical passes, with no real meaning in the build-up play, it could ideally fit in under the tactical setup of Mauricio Pochettino.
Indeed, the Argentine’s system revolves around the centre-backs rotating possession at the back while two attacking fullbacks cover the entire flank. Romagnoli’s slow passing, in that regard, would help Tottenham employ a measured build-up system.
It’s also fair to point out that the Italian is capable of passing in between the lines as well, though he may be as good as someone like Alderweireld or van Dijk.
A long-term option
What makes Romagnoli such a sought-after defender in Europe is his wealth of experience in the Italian top flight. He has, in fact, already notched up 170 Serie A appearances during his spell at Milan and Roma – making him one of the most experienced defenders in his age group.
Speaking of his age, Romagnoli, at 24, has time on his side and is only bound to improve. His robust style of play could suit the Premier League. Hence, the Italian international can be deemed as an ideal long-term replacement for Vertonghen.
