Chelsea will surely be one of the busiest teams next summer when their current transfer ban comes to an end. The Blues have endured a difficult start to the campaign under new manager Frank Lampard. But, it is caused due to their inability to sign new players in the transfer market.
So, it’s only natural that they will look to secure the services of a host of players next summer. One player they should really keep an eye on is Shon Weissman of Wolfsberger FC.
But who is Weissman?
A product of the Maccabi Haifa youth academy, Weissman was rated one of the brightest talents in his native Israel. But, quite surprisingly, he never really managed to make a mark in his childhood club Haifa in his first attempt. He spent loan spells at Acre, Netanya and Shmona before eventually returning to Haifa in 2018.
Either way, Weissman moved to Austria last summer after impressing during the 2018/19 campaign. He joined the club for free as his contract with Haifa had come to an end.
And the Israeli international has had an incredible start to his career in Austria. Indeed, the striker has already netted 11 goals in just nine matches so far this season, helping Wolfsberger maintain their status as the third-placed team in the current league table.
Weissman has also impressed in the Europa League, notably starring in Wolfsberger’s incredible win over Borussia Monchengladbach last month.
Why Should Chelsea make a move for Weissman?
Weissman could be a viable target for Chelsea for multiple reasons. The Blues have lacked the presence of a reliable back-up for the primary centre forward Tammy Abraham, with Olivier Giroud lacking form.
The Frenchman hasn’t been utilised adequately by Frank Lampard either. And with his contract coming to an end next summer, Chelsea should sign a back-up striker.
Weissman, to that end, is an ideal candidate. Although boasting a relatively small figure of 1.74m, the Israeli star is a lethal finisher and is quite accustomed to the high paced nature of football, thanks to the tactical philosophy of Wolfsberger AC coach Gerhard Struber.
But most importantly, Weissman will be a cost-effective option in Chelsea’s bid to sign a new striker next summer. The 23-year-old is likely to be available around the €15-20 million. However, a lot will depend on whether or not he manages to maintain his consistency throughout the remainder of the campaign.
