Leeds United have been linked (Birmingham Mail) with a move for James Milner quite a few times in the past year. However, the move is only likely to go through if they manage to get back to the Premier League. The Liverpool midfielder started his career with the Yorkshire outfit when he was just 16. However, he was sold in 2004 with the Whites going through a financial turmoil.
Milner on returning to Elland Road
Milner now recently went on to reveal that it would be an exciting option to play for Leeds again. In his new book ‘Ask a Footballer: My Guide to Kicking a Ball About’, he said (via The Express), ”There would be so many things to weigh up – not just for myself or my family, but for Leeds, If I was being released by another club, would they want me? It would be pointless for them and for me if I wasn’t needed at the time, and it was just some kind of nostalgia trip.”
“You can probably tell from what I’m saying that I love the club, but I also love playing for Liverpool, and I want to play at the highest level for as long as I can. If my time at Liverpool came to an end and I was going to go somewhere else, and Leeds were one of the clubs that were interested in me, then that would be a very exciting option for all the reasons I mention.”
Why will he be a good fit for Bielsa
The midfielder is still thriving at the top level and is a crucial squad player for Liverpool at the moment. Last season, the former England international made 45 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions which shows how important he is to Jurgen Klopp even in his so-called ‘final lap’ of his career. His versatility to fill in as a fullback, or out on the wings or as a midfielder makes him an outstanding asset. Even at 32, he is known to be one of the fittest players in the roster.
Promotion- The only way to get Milner
Leeds United currently don’t have a massive squad, and they could do with a player like Milner. Bielsa is known for deploying a strict training regime, and he has often used his players in various positions. We feel that Milner would be a tailor-made signing for the Whites if they get back to the Premier League by next season. However, if Liverpool considers getting him a new deal, then we are quite sure that he would love to continue to play at the top level for one of the best clubs in Europe right now.
Even if the Reds don’t offer him a new deal, quite a few other Premier League clubs could become interested in him given his utility as a squad player. Milner is unlikely to drop down a division to play for the Yorkshire side, so any chance of signing him solely depends on the Whites getting promoted.
