Celtic were facing a significant crisis at the back at the beginning of the season. They had lost the services of two right-backs, two centre backs and two left-backs. The European qualifiers began early, and Lennon didn’t have much cover who could play in defence. He went on to use Nir Bitton who is predominantly a defensive midfielder in the centre back role.
The Israel international has now been with the club for seven years, and it was assumed this season by many that he would struggle for game time and will go on to leave the club once his contract expires. However, the versatile defender took his chances well, and he even played in the Old Firm derby as a centre back. He was faultless for most parts, and suddenly everyone realised what a crucial utility player Bitton could be.
Where Bitton wants his future to be?
The 27-year-old recently went on to claim that he is ready to pledge his future at the club. Bitton said (The Scottish Sun), ”Every season is important for a football player but, for me, this season is important because I finish my contract at the end of it.”
Why should Bitton be offered a new deal?
Bitton was unlucky to miss the last few weeks due to an injury when he was performing really well at the back. Now he is available for selection and is currently the backup option in defence. We think that Lennon should consider getting him on a new deal as he can be an essential squad player in a long season.
His on the ball qualities and physical strength makes him a perfect player to start in defence. He might not have played much in the last two-three seasons, but he still has a lot to offer in footballing terms. Bitton is still 27, so he is currently in the prime of his career and Lennon can make use of his versatility as the season goes on.
He has made 12 appearances so far this season in all competitions, and it’s hard to pick many faults in any of the games where he featured.
