According to a report by the Chronicle (published on Saturday), Newcastle United are plotting a January move to secure the services of Victor Osimhen from LOSC Lille. However, the French news outlet, Top Mercato (translated by the Shields Gazette), has now claimed that the Ligue 1 side are keen on hanging on to their prized asset until the end of this campaign.
This latest development does not bode well for the Magpies. They will be desperate to add some quality to their squad when the transfer window reopens in January. Steve Bruce needs to make some shrewd acquisitions this winter if his side are to avoid getting themselves dragged into a relegation dog-fight this term.
Osimhen’s Majestic Form In The French Top-Flight
Since his big move to Lille from RSC Charleroi earlier this summer, the Nigerian speedster has enjoyed a rich vein of form in the Ligue 1. He has put in some dazzling displays for the French outfit so far this season. Osimhen has registered eight goals and provided two assists in 12 matches for Christophe Galtier’s team on all fronts in this campaign.
The 20-year-old has also secured seven international caps for the Nigerian national side and has found the back of the net once for his homeland thus far. The Lille rising star is currently playing at the peak of his powers and is only going to get better with each year.
What Will The Nigerian Starlet Add To Bruce’s Side?
Osimhen can make a few dangerous runs behind the opposition backline using his incredible pace and turn of speed. The Nigeria international tends to be a dominant presence in the final third as he has a strong frame which allows him to hold on to the ball high up the pitch. He is a natural finisher and can score goals with both his feet or using his head.
Osimhen’s Unavailability In January: Huge Blow For Bruce?
However, there is no hiding from the fact that Osimhen is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and might struggle to adapt to the high intensity of Premier League football. Bruce will likely be disappointed if he intends to sign the Lille attacker in January as his club will not sanction his departure this winter. Not being able to sign the attacker in January will undoubtedly be a big blow for the Magpies and their chances of having a successful season in the top tier of England.
Even then, the Tyneside club should continue to monitor Osimhen’s progress and make a move to acquire his signature next summer.
