According to Calciomercato, Chelsea have put an end to their pursuit of Krzysztof Piatek. The AC Milan striker has been a subject of a lot of interest across Europe after impressing the onlookers with his blazing performances in the Serie A. As for the Blues, it is believed that they are ready to commit to Tammy Abraham and plan to make him their primary number nine for the foreseeable future.
Piatek’s success in Italy
A product of the Dzierzoniow youth academy, Piatek moved to Italy in 2018 when he joined Genoa for €4.5 million. He enjoyed a superb debut campaign in the Serie A, scoring 13 goals in just 19 matches. As a result, the Pole was roped in by AC Milan at the start of this year.
Piatek was brought in as the primary replacement for Andre Silva, who struggled at San Siro. Same cannot be said for the ex-Genoa star, however, as he ended up scoring nine more goals for the Serie A giants, in just 18 matches.
That means Piatek netted a total of 21 goals during his first season in Italy. Although he has struggled to keep up his scoring form, it is mainly due to the futility of Milan’s creative department that has led to the sacking of Marco Giampaolo.
Were Chelsea right to stop their pursuit of Piatek?
Ending the pursuit of Piatek seems like a matured decision from the Chelsea board, especially after the emergence of Abraham. The youngster, after enjoying an incredible campaign with Aston Villa in the Championship last term, has managed to replicate his performances in the Premier League, netting eight goals.
He is currently the joint top-scorer in the English top-flight, and his performances in front of goal have been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dire campaign for Chelsea under Lampard.
Abraham has impressed the fans as well as the coach with his movement and tenacity. But most importantly, it is his ability to finish that has really caught the eye this season, and it looks like the youngster is capable of becoming Chelsea’s primary forward.
The Blues’ pursuit of Piatek, in that regard, would have been rather futile. Instead, they could target a new winger given the way how the likes of Christian Pulisic, Pedro and William have struggled with lack of consistency this campaign. Therefore, dropping the interest in Piatek is the right move by Chelsea.
