According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are willing to listen to offers for five of their key players in the upcoming January transfer window. It is believed that Mauricio Pochettino is keen to make a squad overhaul in winter following his club’s uneventful start to the campaign.
Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama, Danny Rose and Serge Aurier are those five players Spurs are willing to part ways with in January. And in this article, we will talk about about how each of their departures could affect the team.
Christian Eriksen
Christian Eriksen is the only player on this list Spurs are having to let go by force. The Dane, who is regarded as one of the best playmakers in world football, is keen to leave Tottenham, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season. The club have so far failed to convince him to sign a contract extension.
That means failing to sell Eriksen in January could see them losing him for free next summer. Nonetheless, his departure would be a massive blow for Spurs, especially with Dele Alli failing to impress while Giovani Lo Celso has struggled with injuries.
Although Spurs are expected to sign a designated replacement in the event of Eriksen’s potential departure in January, it’s unlikely they will be able to find a proper player, who can fill in the shoes of the ex-Ajax starlet.
Danny Rose
Danny Rose’s departure could also serve as a blow for Tottenham. The north London giants have struggled in the fullback department this season and Danny Rose has been the only consistent player, though some of his performances so far, have been questionable.
Either way, Rose’s alternative Ben Davies has failed to maintain consistency while new signing Ryan Sessegnon has struggled with injuries. That means the Lilywhites will be forced to sign a new left-back in January. They will likely opt for a younger replacement, but at the same time, it could also turn out to be a risk.
Eric Dier
Selling Eric Dier could turn out to be a mature decision from the Tottenham board. The English international, following his injury problems last season, has not able to perform over the past 12 months. He has been clumsy with his passing and has appeared pretty slow for Pochettino’s tactical setup.
As a result, Dier has been overshadowed by Harry Winks, and with Moussa Sissoko emerging as a key player for Tottenham, it’s unlikely he has any future at the club. Therefore, his sale does make sense. Not to mention, it will help the club fund move for their January targets as they aim to add reinforcements.
Serge Aurier
Serge Aurier’s departure from north London would make complete sense from every aspect. The Ivorian, after joining from Paris Saint-Germain, has been one of the most inconsistent players in the Premier League. His lack of temperament has often got his team in trouble.
Hence, Tottenham should get rid of Aurier and sign someone who can actually offer solidity at the back while emulating Kieran Trippier at the same time. However, that would mean they will have to overhaul the entire fullback department, especially if Rose also leaves.
Victor Wanyama
Tottenham won’t likely be fazed by the departure of Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan international is evidently not included in Pochettino’s plans and was even on his way away from north London in the summer, though a move didn’t materialise.
Wanyama has struggled at Tottenham due to his injury problems and lack of form. And with Dier also struggling, it might be time for Spurs to move on from their holding midfielders and bring in some youthful exuberance in the centre of the pitch.
