According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a January move for Nathan Ferguson. The West Bromwich defender has been identified as one of four targets for Mauricio Pochettino in the upcoming winter transfer window as he plans to add more quality to his setup. Ferguson has impressed the onlookers with his performances this season.
Ferguson’s rapid rise to prominence
A product of the West Brom youth academy, Ferguson was rewarded with his performances in the youth leagues with a promotion to the senior side in the summer. He was playing with the reserves the season before, notably making 19 appearances in Premier League 2.
And upon his promotion to senior football, Ferguson has instantly become a key member of the West Brom backline. In fact, he has already mustered almost 1,000 minutes of league football, helping the Baggies stay on top of the Championship table with 26 points on the board.
Ferguson is a centre-back by trade. But, he has mostly been utilised as a fullback, ahead of Kieran Gibbs. It highlights his versatility as he can play anywhere across the backline. The 19-year-old has also impressed with the ability to play out from the back. He is equipped with quick feet that allow him to evade the press while his tactical sense enables him to find the ideal pass.
And despite boasting a rather short 1.78m figure, Ferguson is quite effective in the air, having won 1.8 headed duels per game with a success rate of 64%. His tackle success rate of 73% is impressive as well, meaning the youngster is a well-rounded defender.
Is Ferguson a viable target for Spurs?
Ferguson has already shown what he is capable of in these early parts of the campaign. His all-round nature, coupled with his commitment and versatility, could provide additional cover for Pochettino.
Especially in the fullback department, the Argentine has lacked a reliable right-back and an alternative for Danny Rose on the opposite flank. Ferguson, to that end, can be utilised in both areas while he can also serve as an alternative for the likes of Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez.
Therefore, signing Ferguson could turn out to be a smart piece of business from the Lilywhites. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the youngster will be able to integrate himself to the high paced nature of the Premier League. Not to mention, he will also have to adapt to Pochettino’s tactics.
