It was supposed to be one exciting addition for Celtic, particularly after the summer exit of Kieran Tierney who made his way to Arsenal. But the things have not gone in favour of Greg Taylor since his deadline day transfer from Kilmarnock. The youngster is still waiting for his Hoops debut having failed to make it to the matchday squad on most occasions.
The 21-year-old was brought in to cover and challenge Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo for the first-team slot. The uprise at Rugby Park earned him his Scotland debut against Belgium back in June, and the ambitious move to Glasgow was touted to be a shrewd one for all parties involved.
Neil Lennon, however, has recently given his insight on the whole situation and suggested Taylor stay patient for the time being.
“Boli’s been in & been pretty consistent, Jonny’s able in terms of a squad player to play in a number of position. Greg’s just a bona fide left back. I had a chat with him. He understands he needs to be patient, he will get his chance”
Stated the gaffer during the pre-Aberdeen press conference (as quoted by Alison Conroy of Radio Clyde) which may lead to a couple of conclusions.
Celtic’s Traditional Approach And Boli’s Influence
Managers, these days, prefer their fullbacks to be adventurous and attacking-minded. Lennon, however, is more inclined to a traditional approach and Boli has slotted in perfectly due to his defensive attributes.
The former Rapid Vienna left-back was criticised early on for his instability down the wide areas. However, the performance against Rangers at Ibrox drew the attention of many as he successfully contained veteran Scott Arfield in their momentous 2-0 victory. The Belgian has cemented his place ever since and brought in more balance as well as composure at both ends of the pitch.
Taylor’s Signing – A Luxury Over Necessity
Boli, 24, would serve the club for years to come and Jonny Hayes, now 32, is an able alternative considering his experience as well as versatility. Taylor, in his early twenties, has enough time to flourish but, at the same time, needs minutes after featuring as a first-choice at Kilmarnock over the past three campaigns.
He should seek a loan switch if the scenario remains the same later this term and stake a claim in Lennon’s long-term plans by impressing elsewhere.
