Manchester United advanced to the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup after securing a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, earlier this evening.
It was a rather slow start from the visitors, with Chelsea looking quite composed in possession throughout the first phase of the game. However, United gradually started to play more comfortably as time wore on and they looked quite assured in defence. They even took the lead in the 25th minute when Daniel James was fouled inside the box by Marcos Alonso. Marcus Rashford converted the resulting penalty.
That being said, Chelsea came out all guns blazing after the restart. The Blues dominated the first twenty minutes of the second-half and deservedly scored the equaliser through Michy Batshuayi. However, the Red Devils once again got back into the game and restored their lead in the most exotic fashion as Rashford converted a free-kick from at least 35 yards out. It was a timely goal for the visitors, who somehow managed to retain their lead at the end despite experiencing some nervy defensive moments.
Here is how Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s men performed in their win over the Blues.
Sergio Romero 6
Despite Chelsea’s lion’s share of possession, Romero had very little to do as the Blues mustered only one shot on target apart from the Batshuayi goal.
Victor Lindelof 7
Lindelof’s defensive work-rate was crucial as Chelsea struggled to breach the United backline for the most part of the first half. However, the Swede had to make way for Anthony Martial in the second half, forcing Solskjaer to revert to a 4-2-3-1.
Harry Maguire 8
Provided the solidity that was quintessential in dealing with the sharp attack of Chelsea. Maguire’s physical and aerial prowess meant that the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount were neutralised entirely.
Marcos Rojo 7
Had an okayish evening featuring as an additional defender in United’s three-man backline. However, one might argue that the Argentine could have provided better defensive support for the wingback, especially when the hosts were pushing forward.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 8.5
Wan-Bissaka’s presence on the right flank was crucial as the in-form Christian Pulisic offered very little threat going forward. The ex-Palace star had kept the American in his pocket throughout the game. Yet another disciplined performance from the new signing.
Scott McTominay 8.5
Made a plethora of key tackles and interceptions to prevent Chelsea from dominating the Man United midfield that was already missing Paul Pogba. Although he might have gotten lucky by not getting a second yellow late in the game, the young Scot deserves credit for his hard-working display.
Fred 7.5
Complemented the efforts of McTominay and provided the necessary support whenever it was needed. The Brazilian could have done a bit more with creativity on the ball, but it was certainly a promising display.
Brandon Williams 7
Williams was kept busy throughout the evening by Callum Hudson-Odoi. The Chelsea winger caused a lot of problems on the left flank, and the young left-back had to deal with it all. He did, however, show glimpses of his brilliance in the second half. But overall, it wasn’t the best of matches for the youngster.
Jesse Lingard 5
Yet another ineffective attacking display from the England international, who continues his bad run of form. Lingard was almost anonymous this evening before being rightfully replaced in the second half.
Daniel James 7
Won the penalty, which led to the first goal. But aside from that, the Welshman provided a decent threat going forward, thanks to his pace and willingness to invade the Chelsea backline.
Marcus Rashford 9
Stole the show with an incredible free-kick, after initially scoring an unconvincing penalty to open the scoring. Aside from his goals, Rashford’s pace and tenacity made life difficult for the Chelsea defenders. But, he had to be subbed off late in the game, though the knock didn’t look serious.
SUBSTITUTES
Anthony Martial 7.5
Martial’s substitution just after the hour mark was important as it allowed United to employ a 4-2-3-1 formation once again. After which, they found a lot of freedom going forward, partly thanks to the mobility of the Frenchman.
Andreas Pereira 7
Replaced the ineffective Lingard in the 67th minute and provided the urgency in the middle third of the pitch.
Ashley Young N/A
A late replacement for Rashford, who was limping off. Made a rash foul just after coming on.
