Dundee United’s Lawrence Shankland has been linked with Rangers in the last few days. Former Ayr United manager Ian McCall has confirmed recently (Daily Record) that Shankland was close to moving to Ibrox in January. The striker has once again managed to catch the limelight as he has scored 15 goals this season in 12 appearances for Dundee United in the Championship.
McCall on Shankland moving away in January
McCall recently said, ”That was close. It was very close. Particularly for one of them to come in and take him.” Pressed by host Richard Gordon on whether it was “the blue half”, the former Ayr boss responded “yes”.
McCall is currently the boss of Patrick Thistle, and he must have seen Shankland develop from close quarters after his terrific few years with Ayr United. Last season, Shankland managed 34 goals in all competitions for them and swept away almost all the individual honours at the club.
The 24 -year-old has also indicated in the past that he could have a soft corner for Rangers. The Scotsman was asked once about his favourite Stadium to which he replied, ”Ibrox when it’s full, is always some experience. Just walking out the tunnel to the noise always gives you shivers down your spine, it’s a great feeling.”
It remains to be seen now whether Rangers will renew their interest for him in the future after not signing him earlier. With Celtic also in the picture, it would be interesting to see which team end up securing the services of this red hot striker.
Rangers have two in-form strikers in Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos. However, Gerrard lacks too many options apart from them. Greg Stewart can fill in that role given his versatility, but he is more effective as a no. 10. Therefore the Gers might need a third centre forward, and Shankland could be an ideal signing given his rich vein of form.
What should have Gerrard done?
It’s true that Shankland is yet to be tested in the top flight, but the way he has played so far suggests that he would score goals in the Premiership as well. Shankland’s standout attributes are his pace and finishing prowess. The Scottish forward is always looking to make runs from the shoulders of the last defender. He seems to be a natural finisher in front of the opposition goal as he finds the back of the net more often than not when a chance presents itself.
Gerrard should have probably gone ahead with his signing in January when they were close to getting their man. Maybe they could have then sent him away on loan so that he would continue to get his regular minutes.
