According to the latest reports from Daily Record, Newcastle United have opened talks with Scotland’s u-17 midfielder Reagan Thomson for a possible move in the January transfer window. Reports also add that Glaswegian giants Rangers and Celtic recently watched him in action along with Newcastle United and other top English clubs when Reagan featured for Scotland’s south side. Reagan went on to provide two assists against Iceland in that game.
The midfielder currently plies his trade for Queen’s Park who are a fourth division Scottish outfit. The club has an amateur status so they won’t qualify for a transfer fee from the Magpies. However, Thomson has come up from the club’s academy so the Toon will have to pay a compensation fee to get him. Reports add that Newcastle are on the verge of agreeing on a substantial fee for the 16-year-old. However, it is likely to be significant from Queen’s Park point of view and not for a Premier League side like Newcastle.
Thomson has also started to appear for Queen’s Park senior side this season. The young midfielder has eight appearances to his name in all competitions so far.
One for the future?
It is always advisable to keep the young pool of players coming in. It is highly unlikely that Thomson will make an impact in United’s senior team if he joins the club in January. Steve Bruce probably looks at him as an option for the future. Two of the biggest clubs in Scotland seemed to be interested in him, so that is a testament to Thomson’s talent. He is highly regarded as he is known as a creative midfielder who can create goals.
The Magpies are currently loaded with defensive-minded midfielders in their roster. They sometimes lack the creative spark in the middle or someone who can feed the ball to the strikers consistently. Bruce currently relies heavily on counter-attacking and wing play to push United up the pitch.
Time for Thomson to step up
Moving to the Premier League from a Scottish fourth-tier outfit will be a big step up for someone like Thomson. However, he has shown his ability for Scotland’s youth sides, and Newcastle will hope that he can emerge as a top-class talent for the future.
Often young players, when they earn a big move, think that they have made it. But if Thomson moves to the Premier League, then that is when his real test will start. He will be up against some of the best talents of the world, and that will be the real-time for him to kick on further if he wants to make it at the top level.
