In a recent interview (via Manchester Evening News), Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni provided an update on Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero’s injury and said, “Sergio Aguero is not here because he’s been carrying a problem and has not been training 100 per cent with his club. Surely both will be here next month.”
Manchester Evening News has claimed that the South American marksman is expected to be back in training later this week as he prepares himself for the Premier League clash away at Crystal Palace this weekend.
Man City’s Over-Reliance On Aguero This Season
The Citizens cannot afford to lose any more ground to Liverpool in the title race, so Pep Guardiola would need Aguero back, firing on all cylinders if his men are to come away with maximum points from Selhurst Park on Saturday. The Argentina international has been enjoying a rich vein of form for Man City this season and has been an unstoppable force for his side when he is leading the charge up top.
Aguero has netted eight goals and grabbed two assists in nine appearances for Guardiola’s team this term in all competitions. The former Atletico Madrid centre-forward has also secured 96 international caps for the Argentine national side and has scored 40 goals for his nation in the process.
What Does The Argentine Striker Offer On The Pitch?
Aguero has lost a yard of pace, but he can still be a clinical finisher in the final third. The Argentine can be a fox inside the opposition box and usually buries his chances when they present itself. If the veteran striker can stay fit for the majority of this campaign, then the Citizens will stand a good chance of achieving more success in domestic competitions and hopefully, in Europe as well.
The 31-year-old is an essential component of Guardiola’s attack while one can also argue whether Gabriel Jesus is good enough to replace him in the Man City first-team. Aguero has been able to retain his starting berth at the Etihad Stadium for now. However, he is heading into the twilight years of his playing career, so things are expected to slow down for him in the coming years.
Aguero Back In Training This Week: Huge Relief For Guardiola?
Either way, the fact that Aguero’s injury was not as serious as initially feared will be a massive relief for the Mancunian outfit as they head into this weekend looking to secure a favourable result at Selhurst Park.
