According to the reports from Birmingham Mail, Leeds United can go on to sign their former academy product James Milner if they manage to achieve promotion by the next season. It has been suggested that even Milner is open to that move.
Milner on his contract situation with Liverpool
The versatile Liverpool midfielder recently talked about his future and said, ”Who knows, you know? There have been talks (about contract), so hopefully, it gets resolved sooner rather than later. But at this moment I will just keep playing football as well as I can.”
Milner has been an epitome of professionalism throughout his footballing career. The former England international broke into Leeds United’s first team when he was just 16 and 16 more years down the line; he still has the hunger to keep going on at the top level.
The Englishman is supremely fit and hardly misses a game due to injuries. Milner made 45 appearances for Liverpool last season in all competitions. That shows that even in the so-called final lap of his career, he is making an immense contribution on the field for one of the best teams in Europe right now.
A tailor-made signing for Bielsa
Milner’s tactical awareness, versatility and experience will make him an excellent signing for Bielsa. The Argentine is known for his strict training regime, and we are quite sure that Milner will be able to thrive in the current environment at Elland Road. Bielsa often utilises his players in various positions and Milner will be a tailor-made player for him as he can play on the flanks as a winger or fullback or through the middle in midfield.
However, Leeds United’s hope of getting him solely depends on whether they will be able to move up to the Premier League or not. It also remains to be seen whether the Reds will offer him a new contract or not after his current deal expires in the summer of 2020. Even if Liverpool doesn’t offer him a contract, we are expecting quite a few Premier League clubs to line up for his signature give his utility.
The Whites are currently in a tight race with numerous teams to finish in the top two. The fans and the club management would surely like a fairytale ending for their former academy product. However, as things stand, Milner is unlikely to drop down a division so United will have to make sure they get to the Premier League by next season. Even then, Liverpool might extend his current contract given that he is still contributing for them on the pitch.
