Ever since Steven Gerrard has arrived at Rangers, the club has gone through wholesale changes. Gerrard’s impact on the transfer market has been there for everyone to see as he brought in quite a few players one wouldn’t have expected Ranger to get. One of them was Jermain Defoe as both of them had played together at the national level, and the English manager managed to get him on an 18-month loan from Premier League outfit Bournemouth.
Defoe’s contract with the Cherries will expire next summer along with his loan spell with Rangers. The veteran English striker recently revealed that he is looking to earn a permanent move to Ibrox and he has made his intentions clear to the gaffer.
Defoe on his future intentions
The former Tottenham striker said Daily Record), ”I’ve spoken to the manager and he knows how much I’ve enjoyed my time here. I haven’t been here that long, but the appreciation you get from the fans is something special. You don’t always get that.”
”I sat down and had a relaxed chat with the gaffer. The manager knows I love it here and I know he wants me here. I never think about stopping playing. I’ve been quite lucky with injuries, and I still feel fit and sharp.”
There were doubts about whether the 37-year-old will be able to cope with the challenges of the Scottish Premiership, but Defoe has done relatively well. He might be the second choice striker right now, but he is regularly getting himself on the score sheet whenever the opportunity arises. Gerrard would be absolutely loving the fact that he has two fit and firing strikers to choose from every game.
Should Rangers get Defoe on a permanent deal?
Defoe also revealed that even Gerrard probably wants him at Ibrox permanently. Therefore a permanent move for the former England international is likely to be on the cards by next season. We think that it will be the right move as Defoe has looked fit and motivated even at this stage of his career.
Moreover, his experience of playing at the toughest of level could help Rangers in a tight title race. To go with that, Defoe’s presence will also help some of the young players at the club as he can guide them given his experience. We are expecting Rangers to offer him a one or two year deal at best for the 37-year-old next summer.
