Rangers have recruited heavily ever since Steven Gerrard took over the mantle at the club. A lot of deadwood were shown the door, and the club has worked feverishly in the last three transfer windows to bring in quality to the squad. This summer, again, Rangers were busy in the transfer market, and they brought in reinforcement in almost all the positions.
George Edmundson was one of the signings made by the Gers after the young centre back had impressed for Oldham Atheltic. He had never played at a higher level than League Two so nobody expected him to come good straight away at the Ibrox.
Former Rangers defender has his say on Edmundson
However, Edmundson has managed to catch the eye in whatever little appearances he has made so far. His recent performance against Hamilton was faultless as he hardly broke a sweat throughout the game. Former Rangers defender Clint Hill recently lauded Edmundson for his performances. He said (Evening Times), ”Young Edmundson has come in from Oldham and he’s a helluva talent. We looked at him.”
”We watched him quite a lot. I’m at Fleetwood with Joe now, and he was someone we targeted. Over a number of matches, we looked at him and thought he had the ability to kick right on. Obviously, when Rangers come knocking on the door for a player, everyone else gets swept to the side.”
Is there a case for Edmundson to get more starts?
The 22-year-old has so far played just 103 minutes in the Premiership. Gerrard has plenty of competition for places at the back as Filip Helander, Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic are also there. Goldson has been a consistent pick for Gerrard, and the other spot is seemingly up for grabs at the moment.
We think that Goldson’s spot shouldn’t be fixed as he hasn’t covered himself in glory with some of his performances. Both the centre back spots should be open, and Gerrard should soon look to discover his first-choice options.
Edmundson is a bit inexperienced so he will probably have to wait for his chances. But we think that he should be given a go in the first team a few times after his impeccable performances so far. His reading of the game is fantastic, and he is at ease with the ball at his feet.
The Englishman is also a dominant force in the air, and there is no doubt that Gerrard and Co have a gem on their hands. Hopefully, we can see more of him in the upcoming games as he should be rewarded with starts after his recent performances.
