Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side came back from behind to beat a rather confident looking Motherwell team on the night, thanks to a late goal from star defender Filip Helander. Although the visitors took the lead in the first half of this tie, a first-half strike from veteran English striker Jermaine Defoe was enough to bring the scoreline back to 1-1.
Although the home side were the better team on the night, Motherwell did give this match a right go. Despite their best efforts, they weren’t able to hold on past the half-time mark. A late goal from Filip Helander secured all three points for the Gers, as Steven Gerrard enjoyed another victory at home.
Here are the Rangers player ratings from their win against Motherwell.
Allan McGregor – 6.5
Was helpless with the goal as Devante Cole’s low driven shot beat him at the far post. He did well with his handling in the second half and aided the Gers’ search for the winner as well.
James Tavernier – 6
The Rangers skipper was guilty of missing the penalty that would’ve taken them level. Despite sending the keeper the wrong way, the full-back went on to hit the post.
Connor Goldson – 6.5
The big centre-half had a decent game in the middle of the defence as he managed to keep the Motherwell attack out for most parts. Had it much easier in the second half.
Filip Helander – 8
For the second game in a row, the defender has stepped up to the plate when his club needed him the most. After a starring display against Porto in midweek, he scored the winner on the night.
Borna Barisic – 7
The defender keeps proving his worth, with every game he plays under Steven Gerrard. Another stellar attacking display down the flank, as he linked up well with Aribo as well.
Scott Arfield – 6.5
Didn’t have the most influential game in the heart of midfield, but played an essential part in the second period. Did well to maintain possession and keep the ball moving.
Steven Davis – 7
The former Southampton man has been in decent form since joining the Gers permanently in the summer, and he impressed again today. Couldn’t directly impact the game, but played his part.
Joe Aribo – 6.5
Linked up well with Barisic on the left flank, and seemed to be forming an excellent relationship with the full-back. Was subbed off in the last 20 minutes, as Gers searched for an equaliser.
Brandon Barker – 5
The youngster found it challenging to come into the game in the first period, as Motherwell shellshocked the Gers with the opening goal. Came off injured right before the first half ended.
Jermaine Defoe – 7
Was a constant nuisance to the Motherwell defence in the second half, as Rangers began to try and push for the winner. Scored a typical ‘Defoe’ goal to restore parity at the Ibrox.
Greg Stewart – 6.5
The former Kilmarnock and Dundee FC midfielder didn’t have the best of outings but did put in quite a shift down the left flank. Worked extremely hard off the ball in the first half as well.
Substitutes
Ryan Kent – 7
Did a much better job than the player he replaced in the first half. Made some vital contributions in the second period.
Sheyi Ojo – 7
The Liverpool loanee was thrown on by Gerrard to try and influence the game. He did a decent job down the left flank.
Alfredo Morelos – 7
Did well after coming on and played a part in the move that eventually led to the Gers’ equaliser.
