Steven Gerrard must have been left fuming after his side failed to come away with any points from the midweek European clash against Young Boys on the road. Rangers had their chances to win that contest. However, some individual errors let them down, and they ended up losing 2-1 despite having a narrow one-goal lead at half time.
Another injury worry for Gerrard?
The mood of the manager would have gone from bad to worse as the Gers midfielder Ryan Jack had to come off with an injury in the second half. The Liverpool legend provided an update on Jack after the game and said (Daily Record), ”He is getting assessed. There is certainly a problem there. I’m not sure whether it’s the back of the knee or the top of the calf If he needs and image to get a better picture we will do that in the coming days. But there is definitely a problem there. How big is difficult to say.”
Jack can pretty much be ruled out for the clash against Hamilton at the weekend. The severity of the injury is yet to be disclosed, but it does look like a serious problem for the Scotland international. The Scottish midfielder was one of the best players on the pitch against Young Boys before he was taken off due to an unknown issue.
The 27-year-old has managed to establish himself in the Rangers first-team ever since Gerrard took over the managerial duties at Ibrox. Nobody would have assumed that Jack would go on to become a mainstay in the middle, but he has been very consistent in the last few months. His energy, ability to drive the ball forward and perseverance make him a perfect box to box midfielder.
Gerrard is slightly lucky that after the Hamilton game, there will be an international break and Jack will not miss any games in that period. However, things could still turn out to be bad for the Glaswegian outfit.
What now for Rangers?
Greg Stewart has caught the eye in the last few games, and he might get the nod to start in midfield. Gerrard can even opt to put him on the flanks and Arfield might feature in midfield. On loan signing, Andy King is also an option, but he has hardly featured since his arrival, and he might be a bit rusty at the moment. Gerrard will hope that he will receive a piece of good news once a full diagnosis has been made on Jack’s injury.
