Rangers ended the latest international break by climbing on the top of the table in the Premiership. Barring the Old Firm derby loss, Gerrard’s men have looked like challenging their arch-rivals Celtic, and we can be in for a close title race.
Quite a few players have excelled so far, but one man who has quietly gone about his business is Allan McGregor. The veteran goalkeeper has entered in the final year of his contract, and he will become a free agent by next season. Former Scotland international and Rangers legend Andy Goram believes that Gerrard should make it a priority to give McGregor a new deal.
Former goalkeeper on McGregor
Goram recently said (Daily Record), ”The way he is playing he could play for another two or three years no bother. It must be great for Gerrard to look at McGregor and know he can give him another few years, and he is a top-class international goalkeeper.”
”Allan cares. When you get to Ibrox, you realise you need to be a completely different animal to play for the Old Firm. It is a different club from any other one in the world, so you need to be a different animal to go and perform and play well.”
The former Rangers goalkeeper is spot on with his assessment and McGregor can easily play for two or three more years at Ibrox even though he is already 37. The Scotsman is still fit as a fiddle, and he moves well between the sticks. McGregor is also a passionate man and a leader at the back. He is often seen barking orders at his defenders, trying to organise his defence.
There is no way that Gerrard should be losing him next summer and a new contract should be on the agenda of the club. Not many expected McGregor to be this good when he was signed in the summer of 2018, but he has bailed Rangers out on numerous times since his arrival.
What might happen to Foderingham?
Rangers might dominate most of their games but even this eason, the Scotsman has shown his quality by making crucial saves at crucial junctures of the game. However, if McGregor goes on to sign a new contract, then the Bears will likely lose Wes Foderingham, who is the second choice goalkeeper.
Foderingham was a reliable custodian when he was the first choice, but McGregor’s brilliance and experience have kept him out. Even though Foderingham is a younger option, Gerrard should get McGregor on a new contract.
