According to Calciomercato, as cited by Daily Star, Chelsea are ready to rival Arsenal in the pursuit of Jeremy Doku. The Anderlecht teenage sensation has impressed the onlookers and is regarded as one of the most talented youngsters in Europe. As a result, both these English giants are ready to make a move for the 17-year-old.
Doku’s spell at Anderlecht
A product of the Beerschot AC youth academy, Doku moved to RSC Anderlecht academy at an early age. He was even drafted into the U17 side at the age of only 15 and in 2018, he was promoted to the reserve side, which is quite an achievement for any youth player.
But that isn’t all. Doku made his Pro League debut last season, at the age of only 16, when he appeared as a substitute in a 4-2 defeat against Sint-Truiden. He became a bit-part player at RSC Anderlecht since, ending the campaign with five league appearances.
This season, Doku started the season as the club’s first-choice striker. But, after failing to find the back of the net, he is now being utilised as a primary backup for ex-Leeds United starlet Kemar Roofe. The youngster, however, is still yet to score a single goal in professional football despite making 14 appearances for Anderlecht.
Do Chelsea really need Doku?
A centre forward by trade, Doku is yet to make a big impact in senior football, as iterated earlier. He is, however, a talented individual, who is certainly capable of becoming a top-class striker, provide he’s nurtured well.
As far as Chelsea are concerned, they already have a wealth of youngsters, itching to get an opportunity to impress in the first-team. Tammy Abraham, for one, has impressed the onlookers with his performances in the Premier League this term and is tipped for a breakout campaign.
Doku, to that end, doesn’t have a lot of scope of breaking into the Chelsea lineup, especially given the fact that the Blues will likely sign a few experienced players when their transfer ban expires next summer.
Besides, gambling on a player, who is yet to impress in the Belgian league might not be a good idea for the Premier League giants. Hence, Chelsea should perhaps drop their interest in Doku and instead pursue a more experienced striker, who can complement Abraham next season.
