According to the latest reports from the Sun, Chelsea are willing to offer Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori new contracts which would see them double their wages. Reports from the Standard suggest that Abraham has a deal that runs until 2022 worth around £50k-a-week, but the Blues will double his money to around £100k-a-week.
Impact of Tomori and Abraham so far
Tomori and Abraham have so far showcased that they can take the challenges of the Premier League head-on as both have started their season brightly. Tomori spent last season with Derby County on loan where he worked under Lampard and became their mainstay at the back.
This season, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have been down with injuries and Tomori has come up with strong performances in the last few games showing that he is ready for the Premier League’s challenge. Abraham, on the other hand, has proven his worth up top as he has scored goals regularly so far.
One might have expected either Michy Batshuayi or Olivier Giroud to be the first choice striker, but Lampard has clearly backed the young English talent here. And Abraham has repaid his manager’s confidence with goals on the pitch.
The transfer embargo for Chelsea has come as a blessing in disguise for these young players and Chelsea have already unearthed quite a few gems. Mason Mount is another one who has caught the eye and has shown that he can perform at the top level.
Right call from Lampard?
Tomori has his contract at the club until 2021, and it is no surprise to see Chelsea trying to tie him down to a new deal. He started the season as the fourth choice centre back behind Rudiger, Christensen and Kurt Zouma but he could very much continue to play regularly even when the likes of Rudiger and Christensen becomes available. Lampard is undoubtedly taking the right call here.
As for Abraham, it’s almost a no brainer to give him a new deal. Chelsea’s first-choice striker should definitely be getting more than £50,000/week. He is already on a long term deal, but it could be extended further. It will be interesting to see whether Chelsea will spend the big bucks on a new striker once their transfer ban is over.
We expect them to do it as Giroud is already in his thirties and Batshuayi has been consistently inconsistent. Therefore then it would be interesting to see whether Abraham will continue as the first choice option if a new big-money signing comes in at Stamford Bridge in the future.
