According to the latest reports from Daily Mail, Leicester City will look to target Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer again in the January transfer window. The Norwegian defender attracted interest from the Foxes even in the summer, but Celtic were able to keep hold of him. It is believed that Leicester scouts were present in action to see him in action against Lazio. Ajer was also watched by Crystal Palace in the Europa League encounter.
Brendan Rodgers would be aware of defender’s strengths and capabilities having worked with him for close to three years. The Foxes are said to be in for a centre back this January as they are looking for a replacement for Wes Morgan who is 36. The club even went on to lose Harry Maguire this summer, but they haven’t really missed him as Rodgers’ men are flying high in the Premier League.
Lennon on how much Ajer might cost
Lennon meanwhile in August indicated that possible suitors might have to pay more than £15m to land him. AC Milan and Leicester were linked with £15m moves for him in the summer. The Celtic boss then said, ”£15million? I’d value Kris a lot higher than that. He has more to come, and I don’t think £15m would cut it, not that we are entertaining any offers. There’s been no contact from Milan.”
Ajer’s strengths
Ajer was seen as a defensive midfielder as he is calm and comfortable with the ball at his feet. However, given his physicality, he started thriving in the centre back role. He also showed his ability to play as a right-back earlier this season. He can go on marauding runs from deep and can hold his own at the back.
The fact that he is still just 21 makes him an outstanding asset for the Bhoys as he is versatile and has all the attributes required for a defender.
What should Lennon do?
With Jozo Simunovic struggling with a long term injury, Lennon must keep hold of Ajer. Moreover, Simunovic might take some time to get back to his best even when he recovers from his injury. Selling Ajer in January should be a big no-no for the Bhoys even for a lucrative fee.
If Leicester are really keen on getting him, then Lennon should ask for £15m plus the permanent signing of Filip Benkovic who has struggled to find a place in the Foxes squad this season. The Croatian enjoyed a good loan spell at Parkhead last campaign, and he can be a handy replacement for Ajer.
