According to the latest reports from the Sun, Barcelona have been linked with a January move for Willian after missing out on the Chelsea winger in the summer. However, the Brazilian winger is looking to sign a new deal with the Blues as Willian is said to be a key part in Frank Lampard’s setup.
Barcelona have been linked with a move for Willian for quite some time now. Barcelona were willing to pay as much as £55m for him in 2018, but the Blues rejected that deal. It was understandable why Chelsea didn’t look to do business for Willian in the summer of 2019 as they had been going through a transfer ban and they wouldn’t have been able to sign a replacement for him.
Willian on his future
Moreover, Willian recently have gone on to indicate that he is willing to commit his future at Stamford Bridge after his contract expires next summer. The 31-year-old recently said, ” I think I have a lot of wood to burn here in Europe. I have a market. I’m very happy here at Chelsea. Of course, my contract is ending now, at the end of the season it’s over. But I’m happy at Chelsea, and I plan to stay out here.”
Willian has started the last six games in the Premier League for the Blues and Lampard’s men have gone on a good winning run off late. It remains to be seen now whether the Blaugrana will make an approach for him in January or not as the Brazilian seems keen on staying at the English club.
Willian is a versatile winger who can play on either of the flanks. He has an impressive right foot, and he has decent pace and dribbling skills. However, on his bad day, he can frustrate on the pitch with his final product. Inconsistency and poor final delivery have been one of his most significant drawbacks. But the 2-time Premier League winner still seems to be a crucial player for the Blues.
Big blow for Barcelona?
Barcelona can probably land him for cheap in January if he doesn’t go on to extend his contract from now until the winter transfer window. The Spanish heavyweights currently have Dembele, Carles Perez and young sensation Ansu Fati who can play on the wings.
However, all three of them are quite inexperienced, and Dembele hasn’t performed like the €105m man. Maybe the club wants to add an experienced candidate on the flanks. However, we think that missing out on Willian shouldn’t be too big a blow for Barcelona as he is in the final few years of his career.
