Alfredo Morelos was able to rescue a point for Rangers in their latest tie against Hearts. It is fair to say that Morelos is one of the most significant assets at the club at the moment and when on a song, he is an integral player in Gerrard’s setup. The striker has even cut down on his temperamental issues as he has looked a lot calmer this season.
Dean Smith on Morelos links
However, all these positives haven’t gone unnoticed, and Rangers could find themselves in a precarious situation in the transfer window in January. Reports from the Scottish Sun suggests that Aston Villa have been keeping tabs on the Rangers man.
Club boss Dean Smith was recently asked about the latest rumours about the Colombian’s interest to which he said, ”Suso’s got all of his scouts out looking at things, but January is a long, long way at the moment and we’ve got a lot of games to play. Watch this space.”
The manager didn’t deny the links with Morelos, and as they say, there is no smoke without fire. So, maybe there could be an interest in the striker. Therefore Rangers should be prepared for a bid or an interest from them in January.
What would be worrying for Steven Gerrard is that Morelos has often claimed that he dreams of playing in the Premier League. Morelos recently said in an interview, ”It’s not a secret that I admire the English Premier League. I have to keep scoring goals for Rangers if I am ever to get a chance of moving to a club there.”
We think that Aston Villa could really be keen to add on another striker in January as they have just Wesley Moraes who they can rely upon in the top flight. Rangers are rating Morelos at £20m, but it would be a big decision for Gerrard to send him away even for that money in January.
What should Gerrard do if a bid of £20m comes in?
A bid like that will be tough for Rangers to ignore. Moreover, Morelos’ head might also turn if he becomes aware that there is a concrete interest for him from a Premier League club. In that case, Rangers might have to part ways with him if the Colombian starts pushing for a move away. However, with Rangers competing for the title, Gerrard should be able to keep him for this season as Morelos has a chance of achieving something meaningful with the Gers. Whereas at Villa Park, he will likely be an understudy to Moraes, to begin with.
