According to Sky Sports Germany, as cited by Ruhr24, Mario Götze could leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer. The German’s current contract at the club expires at the end of the season, and he is reportedly courted by both Arsenal and Inter Milan. It is believed that Gotze hasn’t had a positive relationship with Dortmund coach Lucien Favre and a move away from Ruhrpott could be imminent.
Why has Gotze struggled at Dortmund this season?
Gotze’s struggles at Dortmund arise mainly from the stubborn nature of Favre. The Swiss coach does not like to make many changes to the core of the team. As a result, he has largely preferred Paco Alcacer as the number nine this season. Even when the Spaniard has been out, Favre opted for the likes of Marco Reus or Julian Brandt instead of ex-Bayern Munich star.
Besides, the fact that Dortmund already have Reus as their designated number ten means there is little room for Gotze to be involved in the starting lineup. Even the number nine slot is occupied by Alcacer, who has been in terrific form since joining from FC Barcelona last summer.
As a result, Gotze’s overall gametime has significantly decreased, with the midfielder featuring in just over 1,600 minutes of league football last season. He has managed only 245 minutes in the ongoing campaign. Hence, a move away from the Ruhrpott does make sense.
How will Gotze fit into the Arsenal side?
Arsenal might not be a bad suitor for Gotze as he attempts to revive his career following a dire second spell at Borussia Dortmund. The German can be utilised as a replacement for his compatriot Mesut Ozil, who is tipped to depart the Emirates after failing to integrate under Unai Emery.
Furthermore, the 27-year-old can also become an alternative for Dani Ceballos. The Spaniard has impressed after arriving at Arsenal on loan. And it’s unsure whether or not Real Madrid would like to retain his services in the summer.
Gotze can be utilised in several ways in Emery’s setup. As iterated earlier, he can operate as Ozil’s replacement in the number ten slot. His technical prowess means he can combine well with other technically astute players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe.
Alternatively, he could be deployed as a false nine alongside Aubameyang or Lacazette or even as a central midfielder, with Matteo Guendouzi in a more withdrawn role.
