According to The Sun, Arsenal have expressed their interest in acquiring the services of Joey Dawson. The Scunthorpe United youngster has raised a lot of eyebrows, of late, even though he is not a first-team player at his current club. As a result, the Gunners are keen to secure the signature of the 16-year-old, who plays as a midfielder.
Who is Joey Dawson?
Dawson is famously the nephew of former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson. He is also the son Andy Dawson, who used to play for Hull City. However, the youngster is not yet a fully-fledged member of the Scunthorpe senior side. In fact, he still plays for the U18 team.
However, Dawson made his professional debut earlier this season, when he featured as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Derby County in the first round of the EFL Cup. As it stands, he is yet to make his League Two debut. However, Dawson’s appearance against the Rams made him the youngest ever player to represent Scunthorpe, at the age of just 16.
Should Arsenal make a move for Dawson?
It’s too early to establish whether or not Dawson is a viable target for Arsenal. The midfielder is yet to make his League Two debut. Scunthorpe, as well, have a stacked central midfield department, meaning it’s unlikely they will need someone from the academy to step up.
Even then, it won’t be a surprise to see Dawson being given a few more opportunities to impress. He has already appeared in the crucial game against Derby. And given his potential, manager Paul Hurst might be tempted to utilise his qualities in the senior side.
Only then, we will be able to deduce whether or not Dawson is capable of donning the Arsenal shirt.
Where does Dawson fit in at Arsenal?
Even if Dawson manages to impress, he’ll likely have to start from scratch at Arsenal as far as his youth career is concerned. He will surely be drafted into the U18s. The Gunners have had the fortune of integrating many young players into the first-team under Unai Emery.
Dawson, to that end, could be another youngster, who promises to make his mark at the highest level of football. But then again, the north London giants will need to monitor his progress throughout the rest of the campaign.
