As reported by Independent, Son Heung-Min’s agent, Thies Bliemeister has refused to rule out his client’s potential move to the Serie A. The agent believes that Son’s love for Italy could see him move to Serie A in the future, with Napoli getting a special mention.
“As for Son at Napoli, why not? You can never say never in football. Son likes Italy, the food and Italian people. It’s not easy to take him from Tottenham because he costs a lot but, one day, who knows?” Bliemeister told Italian radio station, Radio Marte.
Son’s immense success in the Premier League
Son initially joined Tottenham in the summer of 2015, in a €30 million from Bayer Leverkusen. He endured a difficult debut campaign in England, scoring just four goals in 28 matches as he mustered just over 1,100 minutes of league football.
However, the South Korean international flourished the following campaign, scoring 14 goals and registering nine assists. His combination with Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen made Tottenham one of the most feared teams in England.
Son never had to look back since. And during his ongoing four-year spell in north London, he has been involved in 109 goals in just 197 competitive matches for the club, which is quite an achievement.
The importance of Son in the Spurs attack
Tactically, Son plays a pivotal role in the Tottenham attack. He is, in fact, the only player, who has the freedom to play a free-flowing role in the offence. That means he is allowed to hover everywhere across the final third.
As a result, the Spurs attack becomes more versatile as Son can either join Eriksen in the creative department or pair up with Kane in the attack. His tenacity and ability to lure defenders helps him create for his teammates. But, most importantly, he can create space for himself as well, thanks to his quick feet and dribbling prowess.
Why Spurs cannot afford to lose Son
As iterated earlier, Son is tactically valuable for Tottenham going forward. But, the ex-Leverkusen star also has a knack for scoring goals, coupled with the fact that the Lilywhites lack any reliable alternative.
Lucas Moura has shown a lot of promise, at times. But, the Brazilian often lacks precision and confidence while Erik Lamela has struggled with injuries for the most part of his career. That means Spurs will most likely have to search the market in the event of Son’s potential departure.
And that is quite risky. Not to mention the risk involved, given the current inflation in the transfer market. Hence, Tottenham should invest in securing a long-term future for Son as soon as possible.
