According to Daily Star, Gareth Southgate has been identified as the desired replacement for Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are reportedly in danger of losing their current manager, with Manchester United seemingly interested. As a result, they could make a move for England national team manager Gareth Southgate, in the event of Pochettino’s potential departure from north London.
Southgate’s success with the Three Lions
Southgate started his managerial career at Middlesbrough way back in 2006. He managed the Boro for three years before leaving in 2009.
The former Crystal Palace defender joined the England national side as a youth coordinator in 2011 before being promoted to be the manager of the England U21s in 2013. The youth team enjoyed immense success under the tutelage of Southgate during his three-year spell.
As a result, Southgate was offered the role of interim manager when Sam Allardyce left. And after a few good performances, he earned the position permanently to become the new manager of the England national team.
The Three Lions are enjoying a bright spell under the management of Southgate. They most notably made a mark in last year’s FIFA World Cup, reaching the semi-finals of the competition. They are also enjoying a stellar Euro 2020 qualification campaign after winning four matches thus far.
Why could Southgate be successful at Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur have supplied more England internationals than any other club in recent years. So quite naturally, Southgate has an excellent relationship with some of the club’s English stars including Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
The likes of Danny Rose and Eric Dier have also enjoyed a good time with the national team under Southgate. And with young players like Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks and Ryan Sessegnon coming up the ranks, the 49-year-old could help Tottenham continue being a powerhouse in English football.
During his time as the Three Lions manager, Southgate has shown that he is proficient at nurturing young players and revolving the squad around them. His aggressive and efficient style of play can also be compared with Mauricio Pochettino’s tactical setup – making him an ideal replacement for the Argentine mastermind.
Besides, Southgate knows the Premier League well and has managed Middlesbrough in the past. His past experience should give him an edge over other potential candidates like Massimiliano Allegri, Laurent Blanc and Claude Puel among many others.
Having a large share of quality English players has been one of Tottenham’s most significant strengths in recent years. Southgate, in that regard, can help further improve their stock and hopefully help Spurs challenge for the Premier League title.
