According to the reports from Sports Mediaset in Italy as cited by the Express, Tottenham Hotspur full-back Serge Aurier is keen on a move away in January to AC Milan. Aurier is reportedly unhappy with his playing time as Pochettino decided to use Kyle Walker-Peters as the first choice right back. The young defender then suffered an injury and Davinson Sanchez has played in that position as well.
Instability at Spurs
Aurier has started in the last two games, but he is reportedly open to leaving the North London club in January. The instability and chaos in the team is clearly hurting Spurs as they have got off to a poor start in the league. Recently they went down to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup as well, and things don’t look rosy at the White Hart Lane.
Spurs were supposed to build after featuring in their first-ever Champions League final last season. However, uncertainty regarding the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and now Serge Aurier must be giving a significant headache to the Spurs manager.
AC Milan are said to be keen on signing a new right-sided defender, and Aurier seems to be an ideal solution for them. We think that Pochettino needs to keep hold of the player as Aurier has done reasonably well whenever he has got his chances.
The defender played a significant role last season in the Champions League as the Ivory Coast international started in 5 games. However, with injuries, he had to miss quite a few of the encounters, and he started only six games in the Premier League last season.
Why should the defender stay?
The fullback showcases impressive work rate, pace and power and it has been surprising that he hasn’t been preferred over Walker-Peters. Aurier might have to improve on his final product slightly, but we think that he isn’t too far off from securing the first-team spot. Things can still change as he is likely to get his chances as the first choice defender in the next few months with an injury to Walker-Peters.
Aurier is reportedly valued at £14m. Maybe the defender thought that after the departure of Kieran Trippier, he would rule the roost as the first-choice right-back. But he is still having a fight on his hand to become the first choice option. However, moving to AC Milan would be a drop in quality as they are not even playing in the Europa League. We think that the defender should work hard and stay at the club to earn his place.
