Chelsea will play hosts to Grimsby Town at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night hoping to progress into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The Pensioners will come into this clash on the back of an impressive display versus Liverpool last weekend. However, they ended up losing the match with a 2-1 scoreline which has left Frank Lampard still looking for his first home win as the Chelsea manager.
The West London outfit will set-up in a 4-3-3 formation with Lampard making a whole host of changes to his side for this League Cup encounter.
4-3-3 Chelsea Predicted Lineup To Face Grimsby Town
Defence
Willy Caballero will operate in between the sticks for the Pensioners at Stamford Bridge in midweek while Jamie Cumming plays as a back-up to the Argentine on the Chelsea bench. The defensive pair of Marc Guehi and Kurt Zouma could get the nod to start at the heart of Lampard’s backline.
Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta could be given a rest in midweek so Reece James might get a chance to shine at right-back. Ian Maatsen is expected to play as the left-back as the youngster tries to put in a tireless shift down the left flank.
Marcos Alonso and Fikayo Tomori will be available of the Pensioners bench and might come on to make an impact if required.
Midfield
The Chelsea midfield will be comprised of Billy Gilmour, Ross Barkley and George McEachran. All three players will try to establish Chelsea’s dominance in the middle of the park as they look to create some decent goal-scoring opportunities going forward.
Mateo Kovacic might be named on Lampard’s bench and could come on to feature in this League Cup encounter if needed.
Attack
Christian Pulisic and Pedro will play as the wingers on either flank as they look to provide adequate width up top. Michy Batshuayi could get a chance to lead the line for Chelsea in midweek.
The Belgian striker missed a decent chance to equalise against Liverpool last weekend, but his cameo off the bench was impressive nonetheless. Hence, he will get the nod ahead of Olivier Giroud, who has been on the fringes of Lampard’s squad in recent weeks.
