Manchester United will play hosts to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday night hoping to build on their penalty shootout win over Rochdale in the EFL Cup. Both teams have made a shaky start to this campaign and will be desperate to pick up a victory. However, the Red Devils will come into this contest low in confidence after scoring only three goals in their past four outings across all competitions.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might choose to stick with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation and name Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood in his starting XI for this clash against Unai Emery’s men.
4-2-3-1 Manchester United Predicted Lineup To Face Arsenal
Defence
David De Gea will start in goal for the Red Devils after being rested during his team’s penalty shootout win over Rochdale in midweek. The centre-back pair of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof will return to the Man United first-team and are expected to resume their partnership at the heart of Solskjaer’s backline.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka will once again get a chance to impress at right-back. The former Crystal Palace full-back has been defensively solid but has lacked creativity in the opposition half. He needs to find a way to put in a much-improved shift against the Gunners going forward. Ashley Young will fill in on the other side as the left-back in the absence of the injured Luke Shaw.
Phil Jones can be ruled out of this game while Diogo Dalot is unlikely to recover in time to be available for this match at the Theatre of Dreams. The Man United defenders will have their hands full as they will be up against an in-form Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Monday night.
Midfield
Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba will operate as the holding midfielders as they try to stop Arsenal from dominating possession at the centre of the park. Pogba put in a poor display versus Rochdale in midweek, so he will have a point to prove against the Gunners next week.
The attacking trio of Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata and Daniel James will play ahead of them as they look to link up together and cause a lot of problems for Emery’s defenders. James has arguably been Man United’s best player so far this season, so a lot will ride on his young shoulders when laces up to take on the North London outfit.
Nemanja Matic’s form has been poor for Man United in recent weeks so he will have to be content with a spot on Solskjaer’s bench.
Attack
Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are unlikely to recover in time for this game. Hence, Solskjaer will have no other option than to play Mason Greenwood up top. The 17-year-old will be expected to spearhead the Red Devils attack on Monday as he looks to put in another impressive display in front of the home supporters at Old Trafford.
Jesse Lingard might come off the bench to play a part in this encounter if Solskjaer decides to call upon his services.
