An unreliable source Teamtalk, earlier this morning, suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Ferro. The SL Benfica defender has raised a lot of eyebrows in Portugual and also in Europe with his performance against RB Leipzig. Despite the unreliable nature of the report, we thought it would be fun to figure out whether or not the young defender will be a good fit for the Lilywhites.
Ferro’s rapid rise to prominence
A product of the Benfica youth academy, Ferro is somewhat of a late bloomer when compared to his teammates like Ruben Dias or Florentino Luis. He was promoted to the senior side in February earlier this year, almost at the age of 22.
But, he quickly made a mark in senior football, ending up making 13 league appearances last season. He built a formidable defensive partnership with Dias that helped Benfica win the Primeira Liga. Quite surprisingly, however, Ferro is still yet to receive his first cap for the Portuguese national side.
That could soon be a reality given the way he has performed this campaign. The 22-year-old has been involved in four matches so far, keeping a clean sheet in three of them.
What can he bring to the table?
Ferro, much like his defensive partner Dias, is known for his tall, imposing presence at the back. Indeed, he stands at 1.92m, which gives him a considerable advantage in terms of aerial duels. It also makes him a threat from set-pieces.
Aside from that, the Portuguese defender is a strong tackler. He can also monitor his marker and rarely loses concentration, which is quite a useful trait for a defensive side. Additionally, Ferro has a knack for scoring important goals – making him a well-rounded centre-back.
Should Tottenham sign Ferro?
Ferro could well turn out to be an answer to Tottenham’s emerging defensive problems. The likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are slowly nearing the final phase of their careers while Davinson Sanchez hasn’t been consistent enough.
Moreover, youngster Juan Foyth has struggled with injury, thus accentuating the need for a new defender. Ferro, in that regard, is an ideal fit. The 22-year-old is tall and strong, which tunes in well with the physically astute nature of the Premier League.
The SL Benfica star is also known for his concentration and composure at the back, meaning he could help Spurs become more solid, especially against quality oppositions like Manchester City and Liverpool. That being said, Ferro would likely cost a fortune, with his current contract at Benfica expiring in 2023.
