According to Express, Newcastle United are ready to rival Everton in the pursuit of Yussuf Poulsen. The RB Leipzig striker has been identified as the top target for the Toffees next summer. But, Newcastle too have been interested in his services for a long time and could make a move at the end of the season. Poulsen’s current contract at Leipzig expires in 2022.
Poulsen’s success at Leipzig
Poulsen has been a part of the Leipzig side since 2013 when he joined from Lyngby BK for a fee of €1.5 million. No other player in the current Leipzig side has been involved in the club’s success as much as the Danish forward.
Indeed, he joined the Roten Bullen when they were in the third division. He helped them gain promotion to the second division in his debut campaign in Germany, scoring ten goals and providing seven assists. Leipzig then missed out on their promotion to the top flight marginally, the following campaign.
But, Poulsen still netted 11 goals and another seven goals in the 2015/16 season as Leipzig finally gained their promotion to the Bundesliga. But, the 25-year-old’s importance in the attack took a significant toll following the emergence of Timo Werner.
Nonetheless, Poulsen still had a healthy record at Leipzig. But, with new coach Julian Nagelsmann planning for the future, it might be time for him to move on next summer.
What can he bring to the table?
Poulsen’s style of play can be compared to someone like Edinson Cavani. The Dane boasts an imposing 1.93m figure that makes him an intimidating presence inside the box. It also gives him a considerable advantage in aerial and physical duels.
The 25-year-old is quite hard-working as well and often looks to put pressure on the opposing ball-carrying defenders. He built a strong combination with Werner, which is indicative of his technical quality – making him a well-rounded centre-forward.
Is Poulsen a good fit for Newcastle?
Newcastle United have been looking for a sturdy striker after Salomon Rondon left the club and returned to West Brom before leaving for China. They have signed Joelinton this summer, but the Brazilian is more comfortable playing alongside a competent number nine, which was quite evident in his performances with Hoffenheim last season.
Poulsen, in that regard, could be that final piece in the jigsaw in the Newcastle attack. He has the physical and aerial prowess that could help him thrive in the Premier League. And at the age of 25, he can be a smart long-term investment for the Magpies.
